The Secret to Great Prices on Craigslist!

by Greg White on August 11, 2010

Recently I was quite frustrated trying to find a few key things for my hobbies on Craigslist.  If and when I did find price right items, it was often too late, sold to another buyer.  So I’d ask myself, how do these people have the time to be constantly shopping Craigslist?

Being semi “techie”, I realized there must be some way to “watch” Craigslist without having to constantly search for things I wanted.  So I searched Google …bingo.., on a site called “Do Stuff Right”, there was a free program called “Craigwatch”.

It’s clearly written and documented by someone more technical than me, but here’s the essence of it.  You simply create a search string like the one below looking for a “Bandsaw”:

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=Bandsaw

You can add as many as you want, so here’s another for an alternate spelling “band saw”

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=Band+saw

Craigswatch then searches for you every five minutes and emails you the new listings.

In just over two months I’ve purchased over $1,300 worth of new or slightly used shop equipment for a sum total of $400.  It works!
